The Marché Central, a covered market in a 1930s building near the port end of Boulevard Mohammed V, is the best food market in Casablanca and one of the most enjoyable places in the city. The fish section is outstanding — reflecting the Atlantic catch that arrives at the nearby port — with vendors selling sea bass, sardines, shrimp, and whatever came in that morning. The produce stalls are well-stocked with seasonal Moroccan fruit and vegetables, and there is a good flower market at the entrance.
The market serves the city's restaurants and residents rather than tourists, which keeps the atmosphere working and the prices honest. The surrounding streets have a cluster of small restaurants where you can bring fish bought in the market and have it cooked to order — the standard Casablanca lunch formula. Go in the morning when the fish is freshest and the market is at its most lively.
