The Hotel Sahrai is built into the hillside above Fes el-Bali, and its rooftop terrace bar has what is probably the best view of the medina available from any licensed premises. The medina spreads below you, green rooftops and white walls and minarets, with the Merinid Tombs visible on the ridge above. Cocktails are priced at upmarket hotel rates; the view justifies at least one drink.
The bar is open to non-guests and is busy on weekend evenings with well-to-do Fassi residents as much as with tourists. Smart casual dress is appropriate. A taxi from the medina gate takes a few minutes. If you are not staying at the Sahrai, coming for a drink at sunset is still worthwhile — the panorama at that hour, with the evening call to prayer rising from the mosques below, is not easily forgotten.
