Eating Out

Fez has a serious culinary reputation — Fassi cooking is widely considered the most refined in Morocco, full of slow-cooked tagines, pigeon pastilla with cinnamon and almonds, and lamb with prunes. The grand "palace" restaurants in Fes el-Bali serve set menus in restored riads with live music, atmospheric and aimed squarely at tourists but often genuinely good. The Ville Nouvelle has the more everyday options: small family restaurants, French-influenced bistros, and a handful of upmarket places. For cheap food, head to the stalls just inside Bab Boujeloud and around Bab Rcif, where you can eat brochettes, harira soup, and bowls of snail broth for almost nothing.
