Fez is a religious city and the bar scene is correspondingly thin. Inside the medina you will find essentially nothing — alcohol is sold only in licensed restaurants and the bars of a few upmarket riads. The Ville Nouvelle is where to drink: a string of cafés along Avenue Hassan II and around Place Mohammed V, and a handful of old French-style bars on Avenue Mohammed Es Slaoui. For a more comfortable atmosphere, the bars in the Hotel Sahrai, the Palais Faraj or the Hotel Sofia are reliable.
