Without Stopping

The autobiography of the American writer who made Morocco his home

Author Paul Bowles

Paul Bowles arrived in Tangier in 1931 and never really left North Africa, eventually settling there permanently from 1947. His autobiography traces his encounters with Moroccan culture over decades, including long periods in Fez, which he considered the most intellectually and spiritually alive city in Morocco. Without Stopping is essential reading for understanding what drew Western writers and artists to Morocco in the mid-twentieth century and what they found there.

His fiction — especially The Sheltering Sky — is set in the Moroccan interior rather than Fez specifically, but the medina atmosphere permeates all of it. Bowles learned Moroccan Arabic, translated works by Moroccan authors, and had a more genuinely engaged relationship with the country than most literary visitors. The autobiography is honest about both the attraction and the discomfort of the foreigner's position in a place that is not their own.
