Bou Inania Madrasa

Merinid masterpiece and Morocco's must-see madrasa

The masterpiece of Merinid architecture and, if you only see one madrasa in Morocco, this is the one. Built between 1350 and 1355 by Sultan Abu Inan, it is unusual in that it is also a fully functioning mosque, which makes it one of the few religious buildings in Fez open to non-Muslims. The cedar-wood doors, carved stucco walls, and zellige tilework are extraordinary. Just inside Bab Boujeloud, on the main thoroughfare into the medina.
