Al Fassiyine Synagogue

Second surviving historic synagogue in the Mellah, also called Slat Al Fassiyine

The Al Fassiyine Synagogue (also Slat Al Fassiyine — slat is the Judeo-Moroccan Arabic for synagogue) is the second of Fez's two main surviving historic synagogues, smaller than the Ibn Danan but similarly well preserved. It sits deeper in the Mellah and receives fewer visitors, which gives it a quieter atmosphere. The interior has the same basic layout — a central bimah, elevated women's gallery, decorative textiles — but in a more domestic scale.

Both Fez synagogues are maintained by the Slaoui Foundation and by local volunteers as part of Morocco's broader effort to acknowledge and preserve its Jewish heritage. Finding the Al Fassiyine requires navigating the narrow Mellah lanes; ask for directions at the entrance to the Mellah. It is usually locked but the caretaker can be found nearby.
