"New Fez" is only new by Fassi standards — the Merinid sultans walled it off in 1276 to house the royal court, the army, and a growing Jewish population. Today it contains the Royal Palace, the Mellah (the old Jewish quarter, with its distinctive balconied houses, the seventeenth-century Ibn Danan synagogue, and the Jewish cemetery), and a quieter, more orderly tangle of streets than Fes el-Bali. A natural stop between the old medina and the Ville Nouvelle.
