The grid of broad boulevards laid out by the French from 1912 onwards, centred on Place Mohammed V and Avenue Hassan II. There are no major sights here, but this is where you will find the train station, most modern hotels, the bars, the licensed restaurants, the patisseries, the cinemas — the everyday infrastructure that the medina cannot offer. A useful base if you find Fes el-Bali overwhelming, and the only part of Fez where you can sit on a terrace with a beer.
