Royal Palace (Dar el-Makhzen)

Vast royal compound with monumental brass gates in Fes el-Jdid

The 80-hectare royal compound at the western edge of Fes el-Jdid. You cannot go inside — it is still in active use whenever the king is in town — but the seven monumental brass doors on Place des Alaouites, framed by carved cedar, marble columns and zellige, are one of the most photographed sights in the city. Walk the walls for a sense of the scale.
