Zaouia Moulay Idriss II

Fez's holiest shrine; non-Muslims can view but not enter

The shrine of Moulay Idriss II — son of the founder of Morocco and effectively the founder of Fez itself — is the holiest building in the city. Non-Muslims cannot enter but can walk the wooden bar (horm) marking the sanctuary boundary on the surrounding alleys, watching pilgrims kiss the door and leave offerings. Until the French Protectorate in 1912 even circling the building was forbidden to non-Muslims.
