Bab Mansour

Morocco's grandest city gate, clad in zellige tilework

The monumental gate on the south side of Place el-Hedim, built as the ceremonial entrance to Moulay Ismail's Imperial City. Completed in 1732 under his son Moulay Abdallah, Bab Mansour is considered the finest city gate in Morocco. The facade is covered in green and white zellige tilework; two marble columns flank the arch, said to have been taken from the Roman ruins at Volubilis. Named, according to tradition, after its architect — a Christian convert to Islam called Mansour el-Aleuj (Mansour the Renegade).
