Haroune Aqueduct

The stone arches running across the slopes east of town look convincingly Roman, and for years even local guides described them as part of the infrastructure that once fed Volubilis. They are in fact early-eighteenth-century work, commissioned by Sultan Moulay Ismail of Meknes to carry water to a now-vanished palace and built in a deliberately archaic style. Whatever its age, the structure is photogenic and a pleasant walk from the centre — head out past the main square and follow the road that contours around the eastern hillside. Some sections are partly collapsed; treat the masonry gently.
