The Roman ruins of Volubilis lie about four kilometres downhill — close enough to walk in an hour, or a 50-dirham grand taxi ride. The imperial city of Meknes, about 30 kilometres south, can be reached by shared grand taxi in under an hour. Many visitors base themselves in Meknes and do both Volubilis and Moulay Idriss as a single circular day trip.
