The Atlas Film Studios on the western outskirts of Ouarzazate are among the largest film production facilities in the world by area. Since opening in 1983 the studios have hosted productions including The Jewel of the Nile, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gladiator, Alexander, Babel, and many others. The standing sets — Egyptian temples, Roman streets, desert fortresses — are open to guided tours when not in active production. The scale of the construction, built to be seen from the air and from horseback, gives a genuine sense of how epic cinema is made.
