Ouarzazate is a conservative southern Moroccan town and alcohol is only available in hotel bars. The social life of the town revolves around cafes rather than bars, and the main avenue is lined with places to sit over a mint tea or coffee and watch the street.
The terrace cafes on Avenue Mohammed V are busy from mid-morning through the afternoon and provide a good view of the town's everyday life. The Café du Sud near the town centre draws a local crowd and serves good mint tea and msemen (layered Moroccan flatbread).
For evening drinks, the main hotels — the Berbère Palace and the Karam Palace — have bars that are open to non-residents, though the atmosphere is firmly aimed at tour groups. The Berbère Palace has a more pleasant courtyard terrace for sundowners.
