Ouarzazate's sights divide neatly between the town itself and the surrounding region. In town, Kasbah Taourirt is the essential stop — the finest surviving Glaoui fortress, partially restored and fully explorable. The Atlas Film Studios on the western outskirts and the smaller CLA Studios on the southern edge both offer guided tours of their remarkable standing sets, best timed to avoid production shutdowns. A second Glaoui kasbah at Tifoultoute, 10 km out on the Marrakech road, is easily combined with a visit to Ait Benhaddou — the UNESCO ksar that stands in for ancient civilisations in more films than any other location on earth. The first views of the Draa Valley, reached by driving 10 km south on the Zagora road, are a sight in themselves — a long green ribbon of palmeries cutting through the desert plateau.
