The N9 south from Ouarzazate descends into the Draa Valley after about 10 km, and the first views of the valley — a ribbon of green palms and oases cutting through the brown desert hammada — are genuinely striking. A layby on the descent offers the classic overview: the Draa River below, flanked by palmeries that stretch south for over 200 km to Zagora and beyond. This is the start of one of Morocco's most celebrated drives, passing through the villages of Agdz, Tamegroute, and eventually reaching the sand dunes at M'Hamid. Even if you are only heading as far as Agdz for a day trip, this first view of the valley is worth pausing for.
