Restaurant Chez Dmitri

Long-running institution on the main avenue, started as a Foreign Legion bar

Address Avenue Mohammed V, Ouarzazate

Chez Dmitri has been feeding travellers on Avenue Mohammed V since the mid-20th century and remains Ouarzazate's most characterful restaurant. The menu covers Moroccan standards — tagine, couscous, harira — alongside a few European dishes, and the kitchen is reliable rather than ambitious. But the real draw is the atmosphere: walls hung with old photographs, film stills, and foreign currency; a terrace that fills with tour groups in the evening; and a sense that everyone passing through Ouarzazate ends up here eventually. Book a table for the terrace if the weather allows.

A story
Chez Dmitri was founded in the 1940s by a White Russian émigré who arrived in Ouarzazate via the French Foreign Legion. He opened a bar first, then a restaurant, and the establishment accumulated decades of film crews, overland travellers, and Moroccan army officers. The original owner died in the 1980s but the family kept the name and the atmosphere — photographs and film memorabilia still crowd the walls.
