Cafés on Place Assarag

Pavement terraces with mint tea and evening socialising

The cafés around Place Assarag are the social heart of Taroudant evenings. Plastic chairs spill out onto the pavement, old men play dominoes, and a steady stream of people passes through. Mint tea is the default order, brought in the small silver pot with a tower of glasses; coffee is available but the tea is better. Some cafés also serve orange juice freshly squeezed from Souss valley fruit.

The terraces are essentially men-only in practice, though this varies. Women travellers will generally feel more comfortable at the terrace of one of the larger guesthouses or at a café within the medina proper. The cafés open early for breakfast (coffee and msemen pancakes or baghrir) and stay open until well after dark.
