Eating Out

Taroudant's food scene is small but satisfying. The main square, Place Assarag, and the streets around it have the highest concentration of restaurants aimed at visitors, but the better food is often found by wandering the souks at lunchtime, when stalls serve harira soup, bissara (split pea soup), and mechoui (slow-roasted lamb) carved to order.

Mechoui is Taroudant's most celebrated dish — whole lambs slow-roasted in underground clay ovens until the meat falls apart. Look for the mechoui sellers near the souk on market days (Thursday and Sunday). The technique and the quality here are considered among the best in southern Morocco.
