Tioute is a palm oasis about 35 kilometres southeast of Taroudant, reached by a straightforward road through the Souss plain. The palms are dense and the shade welcome in the heat of the day; the oasis also has the ruins of a substantial kasbah perched on a rocky outcrop above the village. The kasbah featured in Orson Welles's 1952 film "Othello," which was partly shot in Morocco.
The village below the kasbah is quiet and largely unvisited. You can climb up to the ruins — no formal path but the way is obvious — for views over the oasis and the plain stretching back towards the Atlas. A small café at the foot of the kasbah serves mint tea and simple food. Worth combining with a drive through the argan forest on the way back.
