Bab Er Rih

Bab Er Rih ("Gate of the Winds") is the most dramatic viewpoint in Taza's medina, set in the western part of the old city wall at the highest point of the promontory. From here the whole Taza corridor opens up below — the broad agricultural valley that made the town strategically vital for centuries, flanked by the Rif mountains to the north and the Middle Atlas to the south. The olive groves on the slopes below the medina are visible in both directions.

The gate itself is set in a section of the Almohade-era fortifications that have survived largely intact. The name is accurate: the winds that funnel through the Taza Gap pick up speed on the exposed hilltop, and even in summer there is usually a breeze. This is one of the few spots in the medina where you can see both mountain ranges simultaneously, which gives some sense of why controlling this town was considered equivalent to controlling the whole eastern approach to Morocco.
