Djebel Tazzeka National Park

Djebel Tazzeka National Park surrounds the 1,980-metre peak of the same name about 30 kilometres southwest of Taza, covering cedar forest, cork oak, and rocky mountain terrain typical of the northern Middle Atlas. The park was established partly to protect the cedar forest and partly because the area around the summit provides exceptional views across both the Rif and the Middle Atlas on clear days.

The road from Taza to the summit area (surfaced but winding) passes through the national park and gives access to several trailheads. The circuit from the park entrance via the summit and back is a full-day walk. Birdwatching is good here — Barbary macaques inhabit the cedar forest, and raptors are regularly seen above the ridge. The Friouato Caves lie on the eastern side of the massif and are easily combined with a drive through the park. The park has basic facilities at the entrance; accommodation is in Taza.
