Seven kilometres of ochre earthen walls encircle the medina, mostly intact and impressive in their scale. A late afternoon walk along the outside catches good light on the mud brick and gives a clear sense of how the old town sits within its defences. The walls are best appreciated from ground level rather than from above — follow the outer perimeter and you will pass several of the historic gates.
