The National Marine Aquarium sits at the southern end of the beachfront, a short walk from the Mole. It is the only public aquarium in Namibia, and it focuses on what makes the waters off this coast remarkable: the cold Benguela Current, which drives one of the world's most productive marine ecosystems. The tanks hold sharks, rays, large teleost fish, and a variety of cold-water invertebrates. The central tank — a cylindrical walk-through exhibit — lets you stand surrounded by fish while the sharks circle.
It is compact but done well, with bilingual exhibits explaining the ecology and the commercial importance of the fisheries. Allow an hour. The kids' touch pool is worth bringing children for. Open most days; check current hours locally as they have changed periodically.
