Woermannhaus

German colonial landmark with tower views over Swakopmund

One of Swakopmund's finest colonial buildings and a national monument. The Woermannhaus is a confident example of German Wilhelmine architecture: a symmetrical facade, wide veranda, and the distinctive square tower that still punctuates the town's skyline. It now houses a public library and a small art gallery. Worth visiting for the building itself; the tower view over the town is worth asking about.

A story
Built in 1905 as the headquarters of the Damara & Namaqua Trading Company, the building passed to the Woermann & Brock Trading Company four years later, and the name stuck. The tower — called the Damara Tower — was used as a lookout point to spot ships offshore during the years before Swakopmund had a functioning harbour.
