Day Trips from Windhoek

Windhoek is well-placed as a base for exploring the surrounding highlands and stepping into Namibia's vast interior. Most day trips require a car.

Daan Viljoen Game Reserve lies 24km west of Windhoek and is an easy half-day outing. The small reserve has zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, and giraffe, plus decent bird life and walking trails. Good for families or early arrivals who want to ease into Namibia's wildlife.

Arnhem Caves, about 100km east of Windhoek, are the longest caves in Namibia — a 4km network of limestone passages with stalactites and fossils. Guided tours only. Best combined with a night out of the city.

Twyfelfontein is too far for a true day trip (about 400km northwest), but the remarkable UNESCO-listed concentration of Bushman rock engravings is well worth the drive if you're heading north. Over 2,500 individual engravings depicting animals and human figures date back up to 6,000 years.

Spitzkoppe, 270km northwest of Windhoek, is a dramatic granite inselberg — often called "Namibia's Matterhorn." The surrounding plain is dotted with boulders and ancient rock art, and the light at sunrise and sunset is extraordinary. Camping is possible at the base.

Brandberg Mountain (350km northwest) is Namibia's highest peak and contains the famous "White Lady" rock painting in the Tsisab Ravine — actually a hunter figure that has become one of the country's most photographed rock art sites. A guide is required.
