Getting Around

Windhoek's city center is compact and easy to cover on foot — most sights, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance of Independence Avenue.

Taxis are plentiful but not metered; agree a fare before getting in. The main taxi rank is at the Grab-a-Phone bus terminal on Independence Avenue. Ride-hailing apps are available but unreliable compared to flagging down a taxi directly.

For trips to the townships of Katutura and Khomasdal, shared minibus taxis run from the large car park below Post Street Mall at very low cost. Be aware that Katutura taxi ranks are poorly lit at night — take a regular taxi to the door of any nightclub rather than using minibuses after dark.

Car hire is the most practical way to explore beyond the city. Good deals for standard cars are available from smaller local operators including Tempest, Asco, and Odyssey. For fully equipped 4x4s with roof tents and camping gear, operators like Kalahari Car Hire and Rent-a-Safari are reliable choices. Hosea Kutako Airport and the city center both have rental desks.

The railway station on Bahnhof Street serves train connections to Swakopmund and Keetmanshoop, though services are slow and infrequent.
