Heroes' Acre

Grand national memorial south of Windhoek, built to honour Namibia's liberation struggle.

Heroes' Acre is Namibia's national memorial to those honoured for the liberation struggle and the country's political history. It sits about 10 kilometres south of central Windhoek on the B1, with an obelisk, a large Unknown Soldier statue, ceremonial terraces, and rows of tombs laid out on a monumental axis.

The style is severe and theatrical, with North Korean-built monumentalism that feels quite unlike Windhoek's German colonial centre. It is not lively, and some facilities may be closed or underused, but the memorial is useful for understanding how independent Namibia presents its national story.
