Joe's Beerhouse

Sprawling game restaurant and Windhoek institution since 1991

Joe's Beerhouse on Nelson Mandela Avenue is the most famous restaurant in Namibia and a near-compulsory stop for anyone passing through Windhoek. The sprawling open-air complex is a junkyard cathedral of antlers, road signs, oil lamps, beer steins, and Africana memorabilia. The atmosphere is loud, busy, and unapologetically touristy — but it works.

The menu is built around Namibian game: kudu and oryx fillets, springbok shanks, ostrich kebabs, and the "Bushman Sosatie" mixed-game skewer for the indecisive. Portions are enormous. The Windhoek Lager and German wheat beers flow. Reserve a table in the evening — it fills with overland safari groups and locals alike.

A story
Atop the roof sits a battered Mini Cooper, perched as if it had crashed there. Joe's claims it was the first vehicle ever driven coast-to-coast across Namibia and back — a salute to what the country's washboard gravel roads can do to a small car. The Mini has been a Windhoek landmark since the 1990s.
