Ake Palace of the Alake

Traditional palace of the Alake, paramount ruler of the Egba

The Ake Palace is the traditional residence of the Alake of Egbaland, the paramount ruler of the Egba people who make up most of Abeokuta's population. The current palace is a low compound of red-painted stucco buildings around a central courtyard, parts dating to the late 19th century, with a colonial Victorian touch superimposed on the underlying Yoruba royal architecture. The Alake remains an important figure in Yoruba traditional politics and Nigerian public life.

Foreign visitors can sometimes arrange a brief tour of the public areas through the palace office; the throne room with its carved wooden royal stools and ceremonial sword displays is the highlight. The compound is busy with retainers, ceremonial drummers, and chiefs in flowing agbada robes, particularly on Mondays and Fridays when traditional councils meet. The surrounding Ake neighbourhood — the original heart of Egba Abeokuta — is one of the most atmospheric quarters of the city.
