Abraka and the Ethiope River

Abraka, about 30 km north of Warri on the Ethiope River, is the most popular day trip from the city. Natural springs from the riverbed push clean, clear water into the river at a constant temperature, making the Ethiope one of the most pleasant swimming rivers in southern Nigeria.

Abraka River Beach Resort is the main facility, with changing rooms, a canoe hire operation, and food stalls selling fish pepper soup and grilled catfish. Weekends bring Warri families in large numbers; weekdays are quieter. The drive from Warri takes about 40–50 minutes on paved road. Entrance fee is nominal.

A story
The Ethiope River is said to be one of the clearest rivers in West Africa — its water is fed by underground springs and stays a pale blue-green even in the rainy season when most delta rivers run brown. The spring that feeds it at Umuaja is the documented source, and the water temperature remains remarkably constant year-round.
