The dry season — November to March — is the most comfortable time to visit. Humidity drops, the roads are easier, and movement around the delta region is more straightforward. The harmattan season (December to February) brings a dry north wind and hazy skies but also cooler temperatures, especially at night.
The rainy season (April to October) means high humidity and frequent heavy downpours. The delta roads can flood and movement by road can be difficult. Travel by speedboat through the waterways is actually more reliable during this period than by road.
The main festivals of the region are the Okiroro (Okere) Festival, celebrated by the Okere Urhobo people in July or August — a major ancestral festival featuring masquerades and communal gathering. Boat regatta festivals on the delta waterways are a regular feature of the calendar, with decorated canoes, racing, and music. Check locally for dates.
