Kamembe International Airport

Kamembe International Airport (IATA: KME) sits on a ridge about 3 km north of the town centre, and it earns a mention not as a destination but for the drama of its approach. The runway ends abruptly above a hillside dropping toward the lake, and the views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding hills from the aircraft during descent are exceptional. If you are flying in from Kigali, take a window seat.

RwandAir operates scheduled services to and from Kigali. The flight takes under an hour and offers an aerial perspective of the tea-covered hills and Nyungwe's forest canopy that no road journey can match. The airport itself is small and functional — there is no great reason to linger — but it makes Cyangugu genuinely accessible for travellers with limited time.
