Rusizi National Park

At the northern end of town, where the Rusizi River fans out into a delta before emptying into Lake Kivu, lies this small but wildlife-rich park. Hippos are the main attraction — large pods spend their days in the shallows, and boat trips on the river channels bring you surprisingly close. Nile crocodiles are common too, and the delta's papyrus swamps and open water attract an impressive variety of waterbirds.

The park is small enough to visit on a half-day, and the boat trips are gentle affairs that work for all fitness levels. Come in the morning for the best light and most active wildlife. A guide is required and can be arranged at the park entrance near the bridge on the Bukavu road.
