Kibuye, officially Karongi, is Rwanda's most scenic Lake Kivu town. It sits on a broken shoreline of bays, wooded points, and small islands, with water on one side and steep green hills on the other. Gisenyi is busier and more resort-like; Kibuye feels quieter, better for boat rides, lake views, and slow afternoons.
The lake is the reason to come. Local boats run out to islands such as Napoleon Island, where you can hike up for wide views and see the fruit bats that roost there. At night, fishermen head out with lanterns to catch tiny isambaza, and the dots of light on the water are one of Kibuye's simple pleasures.
Kibuye also has harder history. The Home Saint Jean Genocide Memorial is in town, while Bisesero Genocide Memorial, part of Rwanda's UNESCO-listed genocide memorial sites, lies in the hills to the south. The contrast between the lake's beauty and these places of memory is part of what makes Kibuye stay with you.
