Island of N'Dar

UNESCO colonial island with ochre streets and faded grandeur

The historic island at the centre of Saint-Louis is the reason the city has UNESCO status. Its tight colonial grid of streets is lined with two-storey buildings in shades of ochre, pink, and faded blue, with wrought-iron balconies and wide shuttered windows. Most are in various states of decay, which gives the neighbourhood a melancholy beauty. Walk south from the Pont Faidherbe and work your way through the backstreets — the further south you go, the quieter and more residential it gets.
