Musée de la Photographie

Photography museum in a colonial building dedicated to West African images

The Saint-Louis Photography Museum occupies a colonial-era building on the island and holds a collection of historical photographs documenting the city and West Africa more broadly. The images span the colonial period to independence and beyond — street scenes, portraits of notable figures, and documentation of life on the Langue de Barbarie. It is a small museum but a genuinely interesting one, and the building itself, with its cool shuttered rooms and wrought-iron balconies, is worth seeing.

The collection includes work by both African and European photographers, and the museum has a particular strength in images of the fishing community at Guet N'Dar. If you want to understand what the city looked like a century ago and how much — or how little — some things have changed, this is the place to spend an hour.
