Guembeul is a compact wildlife reserve south of Saint-Louis, best known for reintroducing Sahel species that had vanished from this part of Senegal. Scimitar-horned oryx, addax, dorcas gazelles, and African spurred tortoises live here, along with monkeys, monitor lizards, and a strong spread of birdlife.
It is an easy half-day trip if you are using Saint-Louis as a base. Go with a guide if you want the animal stories rather than just a walk through dry scrub and wetland edges; the reserve makes much more sense when someone explains what was brought back and why it matters.
