Umdoni Bird Sanctuary

Small wetland reserve with hides and over 150 recorded bird species

A small but well-managed wetland reserve north of central Amanzimtoti, the Umdoni Bird Sanctuary protects a freshwater lake and surrounding reedbeds. More than 150 bird species have been recorded, including African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, jacanas, and a range of waders.

Two bird hides give good views over the water. The path around the lake takes about half an hour at a slow pace, longer if you stop often. Early morning is best for activity. Free entry and very quiet — often you will have the place to yourself.
