The closest airports are Durban (King Shaka) for the Central and Southern Berg, and Johannesburg for the Northern Drakensberg; both are roughly a three- to four-hour drive from the mountains. There is no useful public transport into the range — a rental car is effectively essential, and a short stretch of dirt road at the end of many approaches is normal. From Johannesburg take the N3 south to Harrismith or Ladysmith and turn off for Bergville or Winterton; the Sani Pass, crossing into Lesotho, requires a 4x4.
