The Drakensberg is known for Zulu handicrafts — beadwork, basketry woven from ilala palm, clay figures, and woodwork. Between Bergville and the Royal Natal National Park the Thandanani craft centre sells a good range at fair prices. The Southern Berg has its own arts and crafts route, the Sani Saunter, running between Bulwer and Garden Castle with around eighty members. Children selling grass-woven animals along the roadside are a fixture of the area; small purchases are a reasonable way to put something back into the local economy.
