Map of Africa Viewpoint

Hilltop lookout over a river meander that mimics the African continent

A few kilometres inland from Wilderness, a tar road climbs to a hilltop lookout known as the Map of Africa. The land below curves into a shape uncannily like the African continent — the Kaaimans River and its tributaries trace what looks like a coastline, with Madagascar represented by a small detached hill. It is genuinely striking once you see it, and it is the kind of natural coincidence that local guides never tire of pointing out.

The viewpoint is signposted from the N2 and reached via the Hoekwil road. Stop at the small picnic site at the top. From the same spot, paragliders launch on most days when conditions are right — the cliff faces directly into the prevailing southwesterly and produces reliable lift. Several operators in Wilderness run tandem flights for first-timers; a short flight lands on the beach near the river mouth.

A story
The shape is real — the loop of the Kaaimans River and the surrounding ridges form a near-perfect outline of the continent when seen from this height. The viewpoint is also the main paragliding launch site for the area; on a good day you can watch tandem flights launching directly off the cliff edge in front of you.
