Paragliding off Map of Africa

Tandem paragliding from the hills above Wilderness

The Map of Africa launch site is one of the best-known paragliding spots in South Africa. The cliff faces directly into the prevailing southwesterly wind and produces reliable ridge lift through most of the day. Pilots launch off the edge and descend along the coast, with a landing zone on the beach near the Touw River mouth.

Several operators in Wilderness offer tandem flights for first-timers — Dolphin Paragliding and Cloudbase are the longest-established. A flight typically runs 15 to 20 minutes depending on conditions, and the price (around R1500 in current rates) usually includes photos. Booking on the morning of the flight is normal practice; conditions can change quickly and flights are weather-dependent.
