Smokkelhuis

Antique and curio shop that has crossed the line into private museum

A rambling antique shop in the village whose owner has spent decades accumulating an extraordinary range of South African and European bric-a-brac. The name means "smuggler's house" in Afrikaans, and the place lives up to it: the rooms are stacked floor to ceiling with vintage signs, ceramics, military badges, old farm tools, taxidermy, and the kind of objects that fall somewhere between collector's item and oddity.

It is technically a shop, and most things are for sale, but most visitors come to browse rather than buy. Allow 30 minutes for a proper look. Hours are erratic; opening times depend largely on whether the owner is around.
