Swellendam is one of South Africa's old inland towns, sitting below the Langeberg mountains on the N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route. It has enough Cape Dutch architecture, mountain air, and nearby protected land to be more than a fuel stop.
The town's historic core is led by the Drostdy Museum, while Bontebok National Park protects the namesake antelope just outside town. Above Swellendam, Marloth Nature Reserve gives hikers a wilder Langeberg landscape of fynbos, ravines, and mountain paths.
Swellendam works well as a slow overnight stop, but it also clears the spare-day test from the Overberg or Garden Route. Come for a mix of old Cape townscape and easy access to nature, not for urban buzz.
