Bunge — Parliament Building

The National Assembly building, known as Bunge, is Tanzania's parliament. It is the most concrete sign that Dodoma is indeed the capital — when parliament is in session, the city fills up with MPs, civil servants, and journalists, and the otherwise quiet streets see real traffic. When it is not, the building can feel like a stranded monument on the eastern edge of town.

The compound is fenced and not open for casual visits, but the exterior — a long, low modernist block with a covered colonnade — is visible from the road. Tours are occasionally arranged for school groups and visiting delegations, and the public gallery is in principle accessible during sessions, though foreign visitors should expect to be turned away without prior arrangement.

A story
Tanzania's parliament was formally moved to Dodoma in 1996, more than two decades after Nyerere decided the capital should shift inland. For most of those years MPs commuted from Dar es Salaam; only since the 2010s has the centre of national government really followed.
