Saadani National Park

Saadani sits just north of Bagamoyo and stretches for about 75 kilometres along the coast — a 1,100 square kilometre reserve where the dry coastal forest, the Wami River delta, and the open beach all sit within the same protected area. Wildlife densities are modest by Tanzanian standards, but the variety is unusual: elephant, buffalo, giraffe, kongoni, and a small lion population, plus hippo and crocodile in the river.

The most popular activity is a Wami River boat safari, which gets you close to bird life and reliable hippo sightings; game drives and walking safaris from the lodges are also available. The park is reached most easily by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam, or by a four-hour drive on a rough road. Lodge prices are mid-range to expensive; budget travellers will find it difficult.

A story
Saadani is the only national park in East Africa where the savanna meets the Indian Ocean. Elephants regularly walk on the beach; pods of dolphins move along the surf line; green and hawksbill turtles nest on the same sand where lions sometimes drink from the river mouth. The park was upgraded from a game reserve in 2005 to formalise the unusual ecological mix.
