Getting There

Most travellers reach the coast through Dar es Salaam, which has international flights from Europe, the Gulf, and Africa. From Dar, the main coastal points are reached by domestic flight (faster but expensive), by long-distance bus (cheap but slow and uncomfortable), or by occasional ferry.

For the southern coast — Mafia, Kilwa, and Mtwara — Coastal Aviation and Auric Air run small-aircraft services from Dar es Salaam Wilson airport. For Zanzibar and Pemba, daily flights and ferries leave from Dar. For Bagamoyo and Saadani in the north, the easiest option is to hire a car or take a coastal minibus from Dar. Tanga in the far north is also reachable by daily bus or flight; from there you can cross the border to Mombasa in Kenya.
